VPS Backup and Data Security

The Importance of Data Backup

A virtual server can be used for a wide variety of tasks. For some, rapid system deployment is crucial, for others, ensuring data security is critical, and for some tasks, none of this matters, as setting up a server from scratch is the fastest procedure. It's impossible to list all the possible uses of a VPS, but let's look at a few examples.

Rapid system deployment

The fastest possible restoration of system functionality must be ensured for services that:
  • process customer orders or perform other financial transactions, working around the clock or for extended periods of time;
  • provide various types of services, on the operation of which the functioning of other resources depends;
  • high-ranking websites that monetize through search engine rankings.
It is always fastest to deploy a system from a backup copy, since any other options involve configuring the system, which is always a waste of time.

Data security

Ensuring data security is crucial for corporate websites and those with large databases. The very idea of rebuilding such sites from scratch in the event of data loss is simply unacceptable.
You can restore data from a VPS backup or from any other storage where data is copied without the operating system itself.

And when using a VPS for VPN or as a backup/duplicate server, in other words, when setting up a server from scratch is very quick or when the data is located elsewhere, using a backup is not a big necessity.

VPS backup on Virterion

We use an enterprise-grade solution for virtual machine backup and recovery. Incremental backups with full deduplication significantly speed up backup creation. And thanks to robust encryption and data integrity methods, you can be confident in the security of your backups.

Data duplication

The above describes only the first level of backup, which is performed within a single data center, minimizing creation and recovery times. The second stage backs up all virtual machine copies to S3 cloud object storage, which is located in another country and managed by a different company. All data remains encrypted and cannot be recovered even if accessed by unauthorized third parties.

First- and second-level backups are synchronized once per day. In addition, the integrity of all existing data is checked to ensure that no corrupted data remains.

Why is redundant backup necessary?

The second level of redundancy allows data recovery even if the entire data center with virtual machines and the first-level backup server are unavailable. In such a situation, Virterion can deploy a new backup server at any location, connect to second-level cloud storage using secret encryption keys, and restore your data.

Which plans offer backup?

VPS backup is available on VPS in the Netherlands, with the exception of the Storage VPS line, which is designed for storing backup data. Dual-tier backup is also planned for VPS in Bulgaria in the near future.

How to securely store your data?

This is the most important question. To back up your data, you just need to configure your VPS backups as you see fit. You can create backups manually or use a backup scheduler to automate the entire process.
By default, the possibility of storing one copy is provided. However, the number of copies can be increased to five in the VPS settings.

Let's reiterate the most important thing: your data is backed up and securely protected only if you set up VPS backups or create them manually.
